It was a spectacular and exciting edition with many surprising events following each other till the end
of the race. Many overtakings took place: in this historical reconstruction De Adamich is being overtaken by Merzario. Year 1972
sees for the Maranello’s Rossa the return to victory in the Sicilian classic race, also remembered for being the fastest edition.
Local favourite, Nino Vaccarella, the “flying principal”, despite the warm support of spectators along the circuit, could not
end the race because of an engine breakdown. The Munari-Merzario team on a Ferrari 312 P was triumphant in Palermo over Marko-Galli
team (driving the very competitive Alfa Romeo 33TT) who arrived few seconds later.
This panoramic view is a new 3-dimensional image of the famous cross-roads near Collesano.
The building of this diorama took about two years. After collecting the necessary documentation (Google Earth pictures,
Internet and books on Targa Florio), road and blocks footprints were firstly traced in order to delimit the preliminary
spaces. Final dimensions, including external frame and external dome, are 80 x 80 x 50 cm. Hairpin bend was designed with
the appropriate gradient. Habitations were completely self-built starting from high density polystyrene
which was cut and assembled as shown in
“my work bench” section. In order to obtain the rock surfaces near the bend with
spectators figures, painted cork-tree cortex was employed.
Metal figures are all handpainted (about 80), race cars are 1/43 handbuilt models respectively
in white metal (Ferrari 312 P) and resin (Alfa Romeo 33TT). The “Cinquecento” is a Brumm diecast.
Background is a “trompe d’oeil” oil-painted on boards fixed to the base of the diorama
